The Streams

The streams in Rold forest are the streams most abounding in water in all of Northern Europe. No other place between the Alps and the North Cape are there streams with such an abundance of water as the streams in Rold forest.

”Lille Blåkilde” (The little Blue stream)
The largest of the streams in Rold forest is situated in the northern part of the forest. It runs into the Lindenborg å (river). The stream has its spring vent directly out of the ground at the foot of a slope – very typical for this kind of stream. 150 litres of water runs through the stream per second or 13 million litres every 24 hours.

Store Blåkilde (Big Blue Stream)
This stream is known for its very clear sapphire-blue bottom and its impressive source. The water from the stream runs into Willestrup å (river), which again runs into the Mariager Fjord. The streams in Rold forest have always been surrounded by mystery and superstition. Does the name “Blå” arise from the colour blue or from the word “blot” = sacrifice – the stream of sacrifice!!?

“Lindenborg ådal” (The Lindenborg river valley)
The Lindenborg stream runs almost unspoiled and unregulated through the river valley. Lille Blåkilde, Ravnkilde, Blåhøl and Kovadsbækken feed the Lindenborg river. The countryside in the river valley is very unique and filled with plants and animals that you don’t find in many other places in Denmark. Among that the rare orchid “Fruesko” (ladies shoe), otters, kingfishers, cormorants and grey herons which feed on the sea trout that swim in the waters. The unique animal life demands clean and pure water with an average temperature of 7 – 8 degrees Celsius also on hot summer days.

”Springkilden” (The geyser)
Springkilden is situated in the eastern part of Rold forest in Lindenborg Ådal, between the”Røde Mølle” (the Red Mill) and the”Stubberuphus Voldsted”. It springs out of the ground like a geyser with a power so big that it’s impossible to hold your hand still in the jet of water.

“Ravnkilde”
You find Ravnkilde north of the Rebild Bakker. Ravnkilde is a kind of swampy stream which springs with 60 litres of water per second. It’s a much used family excursion spot and can be approached at all times of the year. Stones have been placed in the stream, so that you can get to the other side of the stream dry shod. The stream is preserved and it is strictly forbidden to wade through the stream and to catch animals in and around it.

“Rold kilde” (stream)
The Rold stream is the fastest running stream in Denmark. You’ll find it in the southern part of the “Rold Vesterskov”. The easiest approach to this trickling and purling stream is from the road running between the towns Rold and Haverslev. Around the spring you might be so lucky as to see some of the very rare caddis flies that live only in this special kind of environment.

Nørlund skov (forest)
In the privately owned Nørlund Skov you can find several streams – i.e. the “Thekilden” and the “Kalkværket”. They are not easy to find, but if you start by finding the old, ornamented villa in Conradsminde in the deep of the forest and go east, you’ll find them. The area where you find the streams is called “Kalkværket” (the lime works). It stretches over a very big area and you’ll find lots of streams here. They all run into the Lindenborg stream. One of the streams called “Kalkværket” delivers drinking water for the “Nørlund” sawmill as well as for the manager’s private residence. If you follow the road that leads east of the “Kalkværket” and go north, you enter another area with many streams called “Ersted vælder” (a place where water gushes out) and the forest there is called “Thorstedlund” forest. Special about this place is that the fauna here is like the fauna under much warmer skies. Here you’ll also find a very rare mosquito, that is only found here and nowhere else in the world. It’s a mosquito that doesn’t suck blood from humans but from other mosquitoes.
