Hohøj

“Hohøj” is the largest Bronze Age barrow of Scandinavia. From the top the view is amazing and on a clear day you can see as far as the town Viborg.

The author Steen Steensen Blicher called the barrow “A lovely hill”.
“Hohøj” is about 12 meters high and has a diameter of 72 meters and is the largest barrow in Scandinavia. And it is one of our finest monuments of ancient history.

In “The red House” you’ll find a very nice exhibition about the place.
“Hohøj” dates back to the late Bronze Age about 1.400 BC. And nobody knows who’s buried here. The barrow is preserved and you need a permission to excavate the area. It is said that king Ho is buried in the barrow still wearing his armour and a sable of the purest gold!! Another story tells that a very rich man is buried here and that you can actually hear the lid of his treasure box slamming shut and that great evil will hit you if you dig for the treasure. Stories like these might seem a bit ridiculous these days but has no doubt helped keeping many ancient places intact.

“Hohøj” has its place in the history of Denmark as a place for gatherings.
The area around Mariager is uncommonly filled with archaeological finds. In the area south of the Mariager fjord you’ll find more than 10 ancient monuments per square kilometre.
