Mariager Convent Church

Mariager Church was build in association to the Birgittine Convent in the last half of the 15th century and as "a house of god" it rose in height above the surrounding buildings.

The last remnant of the convent is today used as court registry and can only be viewed from the outside.

After The Reformation Mariager Convent carried on as a relief institution, for unwed daughters of the nobility until 1588, were it's properties were turned into barns. At the same time the church was entrusted to the town of Mariager as a parish church. The small perish, could in spite of financial aid form several donors in Jutland, not maintain the magnificent building, and it gradually dilapidated in the following 100 years.

In 1788-89 the four eastern bays of Mariager Church were torn down, and got shape in form of a cross. In 1931-33 the latest rebuild was carried out e.g. where the chancel got the same height as the remaining Mariager Church. In 1994-95 the interior decor of the church was comprehensively restored.
Many noble families have had tombs in Mariager church. e.g. the aristocrat Otto Krumpen from Trudsholm Manor, who is buried with his two wives and his clerical brother Stygge Krumpen. Stygge Krumpen was the well known last bishop of Børglum.
